BACK-TO-COLLEGE 2013: Message to Business Owners: ‘Get Social and Get Mobile’

BACK-TO-COLLEGE 2013: Message to Business Owners: ‘Get Social and Get Mobile’
Back-to-College 2013

More students are relying on Mobile-friendly websites and Social Media to help with their Back-to-School shopping.

They say that the numbers don’t lie. So, based on that theory, if you’re a business that doesn’t incorporate social media into your marketing strategy for your back-to-school/back-to-college campaign (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, et. al.) you’re definitely missing the boat on improving sales.

Additionally, if your business website isn’t mobile-user friendly, you can also expect that a number of shoppers will skip right by you and move on to some other business that does have a proper mobile converted site.

The numbers are definitely backing up the demand to not only get social, but to get mobile.

Based on a survey conducted in July by Deloitte, the Back-to-College shopping season will see a considerable boost in the number of students using social media and their smartphones as viable shopping tools.

More than 2 in 5 (43%) students plan to use social media sites in their back-to-college shopping. Among those respondents, they’ll use them to read reviews/recommendations, find out about promotions, browse products, visit retailers’ pages on social networking sites, post comments, reviews or feedback to retailers or other consumers, watch a retail/product video, and post to or view virtual image boards.

Among smartphone owners, nearly 4 in 5 respondents (78%) plan to use their device to assist with their shopping – that’s up from 65% who used their smartphone one year ago.

Web-enabled phone owners will use their device to get price information, download discounts, coupons, sale information, view a retailer’s ad, get a store location, get product information, locate a store that carries a particular product, access a retailer’s website, shop online, receive a text message from a retailer, read product/retailer reviews, and make purchases.
